Ray and I had been visiting Cedar Key for quite a few years before we actually moved here in 2005.  One of those years we came with our boxer/lab, Holly, so we wanted to stay at a pet-friendly place.  I found the Faraway Inn and never looked back.  Not only did we love the wonderful cottage we rented, the gorgeous setting and grounds, the pavilion and swings looking right across the street to the beach and Gulf.....but we really liked the owners, Doreen and Oliver Bauer.  Friendly, down to earth and caring people, we've become very good friends over the years.  Actually, the weekend that we came in November of 2004, we were staying at the Faraway when we found the house we ended up purchasing.

And so, of course,  yesterday as Doreen and Oliver celebrated ten years of being open, we stopped by to wish them well.  It was a nice gathering on the pavilion with great people, great food and great surroundings.

The block where the Faraway is now located was once the site of the Faber Pencil Factory and is on the Historic Register............

When we used to visit here with Holly, I'd love sitting out here on the swing with my morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening watching the spectacular sunset right across the water..............

And walking around the grounds is delightful!  The perfect place to chill out, unwind and truly get on island time.  Here are some of the whimsical garden areas................

They also now have a family tree at the Faraway and if you'd like to do your own cooking, just pop outside to grab some of the delightful herbs available..........

So here's to both of you, Doreen and Oliver..............Happy Ten Year Anniversary!  Wishing you many, many more years of great success!

I think you've gathered it's been one busy weekend here on Cedar Key, but I've enjoyed every moment of it.  So I'm taking a few days off from Island Writer, but....................
