The Sugar Queen

I read this book about a month ago, shortly after it was released. When I began reading it, I thought "how silly."
The main character is twenty-seven-year-old Josey. The locale is North Carolina, she's a poor excuse for a Southern belle, lives at home with her mother (who was a Southern belle) and she loves sweets. Josey's life is pretty routine and boring and she finds comfort by hiding in her bedroom closet eating those sweets and reading romance novels.
Her entire life is about to change though the night she discovers Della Lee Baker, a local waitress, hiding in her closet. Della Lee is a tough-talking, tenderhearted woman who is one part nemesis and two parts fairy godmother. The silly part, for me, came in at this point. I thought, "what the heck is this woman doing hiding in her closet?" Because she had no desire to leave. Della has decided that closet is the safest place to crash and she has plans to change Josey's life from that location.
In addition to Della Lee, the other important character is Chloe Finley.........who happens to be hounded by books that inexplicably appear whenever she needs them.
Sound silly? It is. But it's one of the most delightful books I've read in a long time. Allen's debut novel was Garden Spells, which I also read and just loved. Her down-to-earth characters, touch of magic and solid plot is just as good in this story. Of course Josey has a crush, so romance is also woven into the plot.
I highly recommend this one. If you're looking for a pleasant, feel-good, witty and enchanting novel.......this is it. I loved it and I'm glad I put aside the "silliness" of Della in the closet..........because as with all great authors, it all made perfect sense in the end.
UPDATE: I want to modify what I said yesterday about holding back a bit with my political entries here. While I don't intend to do as many as I did this previous week, there's way too much going on in our country politically for me not to use my venue here to voice my thoughts and feelings. And so.....that's exactly what I plan to do. When I feel the need. And I just know that need will arrive long before the election does. As a matter of fact, drop by tomorrow for a few chuckles.
See you here then............

I just want to know when you find time to read all these books!! I'm still slowly savoring Beneath A Marble Sky which is a fabulous story, and so well written. I've been enthralled at each turn of the page.
Have you changed your mind about relocating to the South of France Terri?
Don't forget those hot Summers - wonder if there is anyone who actually can install a/c there??????
Have you started packing? I'm looking at the piles and know there's no way it will work so I'm back at square one and an empty suitcase! The parcel I mailed a week ago containing heavy 'stuff' arrived in Caunes today and Alison has put it "in the wardrobe in your room". Now I really know I'm soon to be on my way!
We had 5" of rain and local flooding however no strong winds so all is safe thank goodness - although I did have a hard time sleeping because I was so nervous last night. Now I'm praying that Ike doesn't come your way.
Stay safe and take care.
