The Plot Thickens . . .

Yes....the plot thickens in this historical political year as my confusion increases.  According to the polls, 52% of white women are backing McCain.  Based on these past eight years, based on the country and economy falling down around our heads, based on the potential for another dismal and even frightening four years ahead......this should be a no-brainer.  But it's not.

It's vividly clear that McCain doesn't "get it" but......neither do I.  I don't get how women can support a candidate who's running mate initially says she "welcomes" an investigation into Troopergate.  And then Monday evening decides she's not going to cooperate with investigators.  We've all heard and read what Palin and McCain represent and believe in....so I'm not going to repeat it here.

OH, but wait a sec...........have we ALL heard and read how they stand on issues that impact each and every one of us?  Do they know and understand the ramifications concerning Wall Street, our economy, health care, education, Palin's thoughts on Russia and Georgia?  Did any of them visibly cringe on Monday following the latest crisis on Wall Street when McCain verbalized to a crowd in Jacksonville, Florida, "Fundamentally our economy is still strong?"  And yes, folks, I AM specifically referring to WOMEN here.  And from my OWN personal experience, I'll tell you why..........

I can count on one hand my personal female acquaintances or friends (excluding bloggers)  that TRULY understands what is going on in our country and in the world.  Sad, but true.  If there's more, they sure as heck have not made it obvious to me.  So bear in mind.....my thoughts and opinions here are simply that......MY thoughts and opinions based on what I've encountered.  And what I don't understand is......I don't understand.

During the 60's, I was busy being a young mom.  I wasn't involved in any protesting or being a politcal activist.  It didn't interest me.  Not in the least.  My life consisted of a small cocoon.  Then at age twenty-five, I went to college.  My horizons were broadened.  I began to see life in a very different perspective.  Some good.  Some bad.  All of it giving me the opportunity to take the knowledge and not only understand my country better, it enabled me to understand the world better.

And during this time and for all the years to follow, little by little, all of a sudden politics began to become interesting to me.  How could it not?  It affected ME as a citizen of this country.  Until the end of time, it would/will affect my children, my grandchildren.  All of a sudden the focus of MY world, MY life shifted.  Rather than experiencing the insular life of a young mom in the 60's, my focus began to radiate OUTWARD.  Because I quickly began to realize that what affected this country, this world, would ultimately affect me.

Watching the national nightly news became as necessary as breathing.  Over time, this in turn rippled out to include morning news (it's the first thing I do each morning....so I'll know what happened in the world overnight) and reading newspapers, articles and books that would enable me to better understand current issues and/or problems.

And what I don't understand is how so many women seldom catch a newscast, read a newspaper or could explain (in a very general way) why and how major institutions like Lehman Brothers and others have crashed.  Do they realize it all has to do with the deregulation of the Bush Administration?

And what I also don't understand is............when questioned as to why they're supporting McCain?  It runs the gamut from "I like Palin"  "I think Palin will be good for women" "I think Palin has good family values and she's a good mother."  Right!  Very intelligent reasons for supporting McCain.  Are these women even AWARE of all the issues facing them and their families, beyond the fact "they like Palin?"  I think not!

So what I'm really wondering about and what I truly do not understand is.........WHY wouldn't the 52% of these women dig a little deeper, research a little more and...........come up with more valid reasons for the vote they might be casting?  Because those reasons sure as heck aren't going to make our country safe, improve our economy or make life easier for the middle class.

See you here next time..............

I'm with you 100% on this one sister. It is beyond my comprehension how well educated, seemingly intelligent women fell for the McCain/Palin fiasco. The lies these two have told is a disgrace to America and the women who believe them without questioning any of their statements is also a disgrace. Have we become so lazy that we'll let our family's futures continue as the last 8 years as brought?

I don't get it Terri. I honestly believe more than ever that people are stupid and people don't care about what is important. How else could you explain it?

A good line I heard was when some lady said "Oh that Palin is so much like me, just a good ole girl." They replied "When you get sick, really sick, maybe cancer for you or one of your kids...you go to the doctor that is just like you. Don't go to the Harvard grad...go to the redneck just like you." That shut her up and I cracked up. I am going to have to use that one too.

People forget and people get the government they deserve. Unfortunately half of us aren't stupid and pay the price for it.

It is all deeply discouraging...! BUT, I read a very interesting Article on PANTHERFIRL'S Blog today...it is an article from an Achorage Newspaper about a BIG Rally for Women Against Palin...(I don't have the link here, but Panthergirl is on om sidebar, if you want to read this...)

I agree with you and do not understand how these polls can possibly be correct...!

I don't know what we do to enlighten people about the TRUE Facts here...And, by the way, McCain is FOR Deregulation....OY, OY, OY!

Keith O. said yesterday that according to some poll, Palin's popularity dropped TEN (10_ points since Saturday....Now I'm hoping that THAT poll is correct!

It scares the hell out of me to think of Sarah Palin so close to running this country....

I totally agree with you. It really frightens me to think "they" might win. people seem mesmerized with her speaking skills and not realizing how little she knows. She really cannot bluff her way through questions, but that does not seem to matter to people.
This just shows how bad his decision making is.
I am with you about watching the news, I feel out of touch if I do not see the news.....

I don't 'get' it either and even more confusing to me is a woman who says she was for Hillary but now is for Palin but will be back after the general election for 2012. Clueless about judges. Clueless about Palin running against Clinton if she ends up being veep now. Clueless about the wars and damage the wrong leader (insert McCain or Palin here) can do in those 4 years. Clueless and smug about it. I just had to shake my head as there was no understanding it.

It certainly is frustrating. I think it's awesome Palin is a mom and a politician - but doesn't mean I should support her.

I figured you couldn't let politics go on your blog. I always like your political blogs too.

Since I didn't get too much news while I was on vacation, I'm still catching up on the latest financial crisis. It is intriguing to me that although Obama rails against the Bush administration at every opportunity, he right away supports the Bush plan to bail out the banks at taxpayer expense. I guess he doesn't have anything better to offer.

I don't know. It seems like no matter whom you pick for President, it's just more of the same--the little guy taking the brunt of the world's problems.

Dave,
while none of us want to bail out these money grubbing thieves, we don't have much of a choice at this point and neither does Obama. If we don't bail out the thieves, we will allll lose! We will lose our 401k's, Its too late, all the people that voted for Bush put us in this situation. This is what happens,, the republicans get us in this mess, then the dem's come in to save us, but the dems are then called on for raising taxes when the reality is, if the greedy repubs didn't go behind their "friends" backs over the yrs and STEAL from them, we wouldn't be in this situation!
Truth be known, if anyone cares to look back on the Clinton yrs, as Bush came into office, we had a surplus of trillions!!!! YES ALL TRUE...

But hey, vote for McCain and Palin and we can be another one of those developing countries or worse!
The older I get, the more I realize that most people are ignorant and , yes STUPID! Male/female, stupidity has no boundaries.

I am now at the point where I say WHAT HAPPENS HAPPENS... I have been fighting a proposed power plant that will be in my backyard. My town officials are BEYOND stupid and so are the people that live in my town! Nobody cares! And thats really sad.. Most people are so selfish, all they care about is their own little life...We have been so lucky all of our lives, for the most part have never wanted for the basics in life and then some. But now, thats coming to an end yet we don't believe it or see it.

But did any of us think 10 yrs ago that we would have to live with terrorists in our midsts?? Did we ever think 911 could happen in OUR country???

So vote but keep in mind nothing good lasts forever....

I wonder about those women who think Palin understands their lives and hardships because she's a woman! I doubt she understands at all. After all, she has a nanny to raise her kids.
