Wider Is Better....

.....IN garage doors, that is.

100_0561.JPG

This is what our garage looked like before.  Certainly a large enough garage to hold both a car and some storage.  But....as you can see, it was constucted with two very narrow doors.  And as my old Infiniti can attest to, I seem to have a problem judging distance in close quarters.  Enough said.  Suffice it to say, I never attempted putting that car in the garage.  We just left it in the driveway, which was fine.  Except the Florida sun tends to do a job on cars.

So you can imagine my concern when we purchased Irma (Oh, yeah....that's what I named my new Infiniti.  The old one was Ivan) and I had to leave my new "baby" out in the elements.  So....hubby gave it some thought and decided we could fix the problem.  Here's his solution.....

Doesn't it look great?  We had a contractor come out and make it ready for a full size 16 ft. garage door.  He even put in some nice windows to the right, which gives great light in daytime in the garage.  The garage door company came out last Friday and got the door installed and even my new Genie is up and running.

Much easier for Terri to manuver Irma into her place of honor now.  And chances are her shiny exterior will stay intact, minus scrapes.

So now I'm wondering......do you have a garage?  And if you do, do you actually use it or just leave your car parked outside?

ADDENDUM TO YESTERDAY'S POST:  I want to thank all of you for your very in-depth, insightful, comments.  I really appreciated it and found it very helpful.  I'm convinced.....I have THEE best group of readers around.

Also.....Beginning this week, I'll no longer be doing the Thursday Thirteen.  While I did enjoy it, I found it to be extremely time-consuming.  I wanted to get around and read so many of the others and it was becoming more and more difficult to do so.  Therefore, I'll let the TT site know I'll be dropping out, and I'll be removing the logos on my sidebar.  The other reason for stopping is that in all honesty, I wasn't feeling "fulfilled" as a writer typing up a list of 13 things each week.....I was bored and if "I" was bored, I didn't want to take the chance of boring my reader.  But not to worry.....I'll come up with some drivel brilliant post for Thursdays.

I'm off to practice getting Irma into her new home.  See you tomorrow......

Looks great Terri! I need to do something with my garage. Thomas has his 1967 Ponitac Bonneville in there now with all his tools, I can't squeeze my car in! I was thinking about expanding it, but hey maybe my son should do that! I expecially was upset when something fell from the tree, hit my rear windshield shattering it last weekend! Oh and on yesterdays blog, you site is great I have no complaints except that I don't get to visit it as often as I would like!

That was so smart to fix your garage like that. I hate those skinny entrances. We have one on the lower end of the house but we keep the lawn mower etc. down there. It is so much easier to park around the front of the house and come in the door on that end. We thought of re-doing it for my car, it would be better for it, but now I am thinking of adding on a big addition to the house for a large kitchen and a garage would go in below that.....so we'll see. Hard to decide if you want to take that much money out for a project like that....maybe I'd rather travel the world? Decisions, decisions.

Aren't you lucky! I wish all husbands would respond like that...LOL. we do have a 2-car garage, but it is my "flower shop" and no car has entered it in about 20 years. On the few occasions we have snow or ice, I really do wish I could park in it!

Hey Terri,

We have a garage it';s full of junk lol theres 5 bikes even though there is only four of us in the house lots of tins of old paint and my dad's power tools which he uses once in a blue moon.

My car lives parked up on the curb outside apparently you're not supposed to but we dont have much of a driveway so where else are we meant to park? lol

How I wish that I had your HUGE garage. I have a tiny garage that just takes my small car. I dare not put on weight or I would never be able to squeeze through the driver's door.

Hooray for wide...garages not my hips please! That is a wonderful solution to the situation...excellent. Yes, I love my garage especially in the Dallas heat of August and today when it's 26 outside!

That was a great idea on the garage doors. Looked better too actually. As for me, I have never had a garage that wasn't full of tools and other stuff (and I do mean full). Our vehicles are always outside which does have its drawbacks. When in Tucson, that house has a carport which requires very careful maneuvering to get in and out of, narrow between the supports and although I do sometimes park in it, it doesn't protect the vehicle all that much anyway. I keep thinking a garage would be nice-- that was usable. Just haven't experienced it.

Hi, curb appeal always makes us so happy--
nicer to bring the groceries into a pretty house.

I too discovered Shalimar in the 1960's --I love it and the reformulation didn't bother me at all. None of the Guerlain reformulations changed the scents much for me they still smell soooo goood. Like the parfum best tho. I plan to do a post on Shalimar , but it is going to be an extravagant one, so I want to wait for the right day... Maybe make a collage or paint a portrait of a bottle ... it deserves more than a casual post.

Boy, I'll bet Irma's happy now! Those doors are great and the light that comes in from the new windows must be a real treat.

We can't park our SUV in the garage right now because of all the remodeling stuff, but normally I do park it in there. A garage sale the weekend after the next should free up space for me to get in there again.

We have leather seats and it gets too hot if I don't park in the garage during our 9 month long summertime season. ;)

Hub remodeled the garage so that I can get the car in with very little room to spare. As a result, I've ...uh,...sort of nicked the walls a few times, LOL.

I stopped doing TT13 for the same reasons as you!

I wish "wider is better" applied to hips, Terri.

We have an 1896-era home with an old horse barn. Since my husband drives a van, it does not fit. My little car would fit if he would clean out the garage.

That garage door look mahhhvelous! In addition to gaining access, it updates the look of the house as well. Nice job!

What's with these tiny original garages and doors in Florida? Ours is a three car, only one lives there now, the other must stay outside-actually I think a golfer designed my garage-I have been blogging Mimi for quite some time and thought I would visit your sight! We are neighbors-I visit Cedar Key often as we have friends up there.Enjoyed visiting your blog!!

That is totally cool...I love the new look, and I hear ya re. the wider doors. I'd be doing the same thing: narrow openings give me the willies when I'm parking in close quarters.

I also hear you about the Thirsday Thirteen. Your rationale for stopping mimics mine for not getting involved. I know I could do memes and blog links and exchanges and all sorts of other things to boost traffic. But that wouldn't be me. I started my blog because I'm a writer and a photographer. TT never seemed to fit the spirit of the thing.

If that makes sense. Either way, my gut says I should simply write what I feel. And whoever comes, comes. I'm glad you have chosen to point your browser my way.

The new garage door looks very snappy and probably makes the whole house look better!
PS I understand what you mean about Thursday 13: that is why I chose not to do it actually. It is also the reason that I really don't like to do memes or ask others to do them.

What a great improvement over the two small doors and I love the idea of a window to let in the day time light. I could use that in my very dark garage.

For different reasons I have a hard time with these TT's or other days which you are committed to come up with something each week that is prescribed by subject...AND then trying to visit everyone...I need to be more spontaneous and I need more time for other things, too...So I understand why you are dropping the TT...! It certainly won't stop me from coming here, my dear...LOL!

Yes, I have a garage and my car is in it every day and night...I only park out on the street if I have some strange thing going on inmy garage and that only happens at very rare intervas...like maybe three times in all these years...! Your new garage door is BEAUTIFUL!

Nice garage! we don't have a garage, we don't even have a car for the moment. When my husband changed jobs he no longer got car lease benefit and even if his new salary would allow us to have our own car we decided to go green for a while... it's been a year and it works just fine.
