An October Get-Away

caubcx2z.gif

  • NOTE:  I wrote this last evening but am posting it this morning before I leave for the Cedar Key graduation ceremony.  I'll blog on that tomorrow

Yeah, an October get-away is something I've been thinking about recently.  Originally from New England, I won't lie, after 19 years here in the Sunshine State I do miss the autumn foliage.  So I thought it would be a good idea to head north--not quite all the way to New England though--and see it.

Our neighbors next door are here on the island about 8 months out of the year and the rest of the time is spent at their home in Floyd, Virginia.  I'd never heard of the place, to be honest.  So I got on the Internet and checked it out.  Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, it caught my fancy.  And then.....I began to somehow find blogs of people in that area.  Colleen is from Floyd and from her blog I made my way to David's and Doug's.  Great writing about a location that seems to have the same "feel" as my island.

I began to think this might be the perfect place to visit in October.  So more research on the Internet, and I found a lovely cottage to rent.....and it's even pet friendly for Holly and Duncan.  You can check it out at this link.  It's actually located in Willis and a 1/2 hour drive to Floyd, the Blue Ridge Parkway, antique shops, restaurants, etc.  I've already booked it for 5 days and we'll leave Sunday, October 8.  We'll do an easy drive of about 6 hours, book at a hotel off I-95 that we're staying at on the way back from Boston and arrive at the cottage on Monday, October 9.  I've driven along the Blue Ridge Parkway once many years ago, but never took the time to stop and spend any time there.  So I'm really looking forward to exploring this area.  I've read so much about the Cafe del Sol Coffee Shop, I can almost taste the coffee there.  And they have Internet access for my wireless laptop.....I can see getting at least a couple blogs done and checking emails in the 5 days I'm up there.

If anyone is reading this and you have any suggestions, tips, etc. please feel free to leave me a comment.  And does anybody know of any yarn shops in that vicinity?  I love visiting new knitting shops and coming home loaded down with new yarn.

I'm also taking my camera and from what I've seen on blogs and the Internet, I think I'll return home with some pretty spectacular photos.  The views from the cottage look awesome and I can see myself just sitting on that porch, vegging out with some knitting and absorbing that gorgeous nature that I'm sure will touch all my senses.

Enjoy your Saturday and I'll see you tomorrow with details of attending my first Cedar Key graduation ceremony..............

If you are interested in Floyd, you should read Fred First's blog and his new book "Slow Road Home".

Terri, I live just below Floyd! I have met Colleen twice. We have a great winery up on the Blue Ridge Parkway you'll have to check out. Maybe you will come through here and come by my house to see my critters and me! I hope I get to meet you!

Ohhh this sounds like a great trip. I read Colleen all the time and have been amazed and impressed that there is such a strong "arts" community in this little town. And that Cafe del Sol....YES! I would love to go there, too! I will look forward to your beautiful photo's when you are there...AND, besides the Foliage in and around New England it is fantastic that you will get to meet a number of Floyd bloggers!
I was ready this time, in case I clicked on your link and found some one-room hillbilly shack. Can't fool me twice. But that was a beautiful cabin and setting.

Thanks for your comment on my latest blog. I was particularly interested in your view, seeing that you're an RN.

Hi Terri, what a great trip this is going to be. The scenery will be spectacular in October.

I'm here via Micheles and I live in the TampaBay area.. have a house in Gainesville as well.
I don't know if you've read his blog, but Florida Cracker, over at PureFlorida.blogspot.com is a Cedar Key resident as well. He's a teacher at the middle school there. (at least, I THINK it's the middle school!).
Anyway, thought i'd introduce you to a blogging neighbor, if you're interested!

Hi Terri, I hope that trail goes both ways! We're hoping to visit Cedar Key this winter. October is a beautiful time to visit Floyd and the Parkway! I'm not familiar with the cabin you linked to, but it looks good. I'll ask my husband. On the second Thursday we usually have a regional blogger meet-up at the Cafe Del Sol (downtown Floyd/one stoplight little town) and every third Sat 7-9 we have an open mic spoken word night. There's plenty of other stuff too.

That looks very inviting! I love the drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Last time I went up that way (NC) was when the boys were young (12), just the 3 of us. I'd like to go again soon.

Deana....I thought you were also up in that area, but wasn't quite sure. I'll definitely visit that winery and it would be GREAT to get together and actually meet Lilly, Eudora, Earl and all the rest in person AND of course, YOU too! As it gets closer, we'll work it out.

Naomi...I know. I'm really excited at the possibility of meeting those Floyd County bloggers! The same thing happened when I used to write for Bonjour Paris....met people online and each time I went to Paris, I actually got to meet them in person. The Internet is a great connection of making new friends.

Dave...Was killing myself laughing at what you said! I didn't even think of that...the previous joke I had on here with a get-away place. But glad to hear you're "once burned, twice shy." And glad that my RN comment was of interest to you. You're on the right track.

Laura...via our emails, you know now I've figured out that Florida Cracker is in my area, but not on the island.

Colleen....That trail MOST definitely goes both ways. When you plan to come, let me know if I can help with suggestions for lodging, etc. And I'd appreciate any feedback your husband might have on the cabin we're renting up your way. AND...the second Thursday will be THE one when I'm up there....so have a feeling I'll be dropping by the Cafe to pay a visit. Laptop in tow.

Joyce....you need to plan yourself a trip up there. And this cabin accepts pooches, so Beans can go with you. I'll be in touch via email this week and I look forward to seeing you in the Daytona Area at the end of the week while I'm there for book signings.
