It's that time of year when high school seniors are anxiously waiting to hear on their college applications. It's a stressful, nerve wracking time for both the students and their families. It was our turn this past week. My grandson in the Boston area had been recruited last year from all the top universities. He's graduating Valedictorian of his class and he scored an almost perfect score of 795 on both science and math. He's worked extremely hard these past 12 years.....and now....he will reap the effort of all that hard work.
He was notified that he's been accepted to Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a FULL four year scholarship! Yes......$40,000 a year, for four years. Needless to say, we're all extremely proud and happy. And yes, he's chosen to accept it. I think it'll be the perfect college for him.
He's leaning toward physics or research and will have to make a decision by December. He'll be living on campus, as the scholarship includes both his room and board, and I can only imagine the opportunities that lie ahead for him. Such a bright future to be embarking on.
His high school graduation is on June 6 and we will be there to see him accept his diploma, give his Valedictorian speech and accept his scholarships. And yes.....I'm extremely proud. I feel it's even tougher today for that age group than it was in the 60's when I graduated high school. The world is not the same place it was, unfortunately. But today's colleges are accepting the best and the brightest and I feel confident that today's seniors will make their mark on our society in a very positive way. Who knows......one of the students of the class of 2010 could discover that cure for cancer, could be the one politically to set our health care system straight, could be the one to eventually bring world peace. The sky is the limit for them and their horizons are filled with brightness and potential.
To any of you that might be high school seniors in the class of 2006 or if you have family or friends that are.....I wish you unlimited success, the ability to stand by your convictions, and the motivation to do all that you can to make this world a better place. Here's to your future and the future of my grandson.
See you tomorrow......

This takes me back to when my daughter was a senior. She is brilliant (1400+ on her SATs) but unmotivated. She's creative so I took her to RISD and she loved it, but again...unmotivated. She didn't apply to any schools at all. Now, she's approaching 21 years old and workinig part time in a bookstore and the rest of the time hanging out with her unemployed boyfriend. ARGHHHHHHHHH.
I'm so glad you're not having THAT experience with your grandson!!

This blog is beautifully put together.
Michele sent me here.
I'm so happy for you! But I can't say I'm surprised,..we all know the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and what an inspiration you must be for him. We wish him the very best at Worcester! ($40K a year---can you believe it??)
love,
lucyd
PS What happens to Duncan and Holly when you travel?
Thanks for the nice blog on chas. Hes all excited in his dry sort of way lol.
And for Lucy....why, we're taking Holly and Duncan WITH us to the Boston area! Holly is a great traveller and I think Duncan will do just as well. I've already booked pet friendly hotels for the 2 night drive up and back and for the 3 nights in the Boston area. I have a pet sitter coming to feed the cats and check on them twice a day. But the pooches.....they get to go too!
Visiting from Michele's - you answered my April Fools question... you said you got a good joke from Pather Girls site but I couldn't find her Blog address. Do you know it? I'd be interested in checking it out!
Smiles,
Chrissie
