Stranger Danger

march22.jpg

Duncan has settled in like he's always lived here.  After 2 mornings of getting up at 4 a.m. Mom got a bit tougher this morning.  Used my stern voice and told him to go back to sleep and we got up at 6:00....a much more civilized hour.  He's doing really well and has had his first ride on the golf cart, which he loved.  Holly sat between Ray and I and Duncan happily sat in my lap looking around.  Took him downtown and he's met the City Clerk, Librarian, Editor of the Cedar Key News and assorted other people.  I think he's going to be a good island doggie.

The topic of stranger danger is prompted by a segment on the Today Show I saw last week and was pretty upset by what I saw.  I've seen the videos where an "actor" tries to entice a child from in front of their home, etc. to show how easily it might be to accost a child.

But this one was a bit different.  They had a girl about age 10 on a fairly busy sidewalk in a downtown area....The "actor" came up behind her, grabbed her arm, started yelling "I told you not to wander away from me" with him pulling her.  The girl started screaming, "Somebody help me, please!  He's not my dad!  He's not my dad!"  Both the young girl and man were acting to see what kind of stranger reaction they'd get and the police were observing from nearby.

I was horrified to see two couples walk past, turn around, pause, and then keep walking.  This was followed by a girl in her mid-20's rushing by with shopping bags....her reaction was to totally ignore the scene playing out on the sidewalk.  About 5 to 6 people also completely ignored what was going on.....they paused, turned around to stare......and then kept walking.  EXCEPT two young men in their early 20's.....they were together and one was on a cell phone.  They also walked past, but then both turned at the same time and without speaking to each other, thinking or anything....they both REACTED.  They took off running toward the man......who then backed away, hands in air and explained the cops were nearby.

It's very disheartening to think all these people chose to simply not get involved!  What on earth has our society evolved into?  I questioned myself after watching the segment and can honestly say.....First I would have called 911, then I would have approached them, totally ignored the man and questioned the little girl if the man WAS in fact her father.  I was pretty shocked to watch this and realize that if somebody's child or grandchild was being abducted in broad daylight in a public area.......chances are, most people would completely ignore what was going on.....rather than get involved.

I think society, as a whole, NEEDS to become more aware and to definitely get involved!  Just my opinion.  See you tomorrow..........

That is very scary. I remember a similar thing happened in NYC years ago and it was in the paper how the child died and might have been saved if only the neighbors/passersby had gotten involved.

There are a lot of people not involved in far too many concerns for too many years, especially in recent years. But, it is indeed distressing to think so many wouldn't have taken just a few minutes to ascertain the young girl was safe.

Oh baby Duncan is so sweet, I want one!
And just a quick remark on the Stranger/Danger, WOW I would have reacted, and I know my sons would have also, I didn't see the segment on the Today show, but it is good to spread the word.
Take care,
Joyce

Kenju....I also remember that incident and another one about 30 years ago in NYC, where a young woman was being murdered in the alley and although it was July and many windows were open...nobody bothered to call the police.

Who knows....maybe some day, sometime, someone will be in a position like this one and will react instantly to check it out and make sure that child is safe. At least I hope so.

Teaching children the danger of strangers is no longer enough in our selfish think of yourself first society. They need to be taught self-defense techniques, and when it is appropriate to use them. As for those people who just passed by and didn't try to help - shame on you! What if it was your child, your sister, or YOU!!!!

Oh I could never be stern with that precious dog! I have entirely the same feeling about the Marley book......wonderful....and I am a fool for animals just as you are............

Nancy....trust me, you could be stern with this little guy...lol I need to have him as well mannered and well behaved as my Holly....so the stern voice is necessary. Also, this breed can be very stubborn....and really does require good training. The only thing I hate worse than ill-behaved children are ill-behaved dogs.
But I agree....looking at that adorable face, it isn't easy to be stern....lol
