Greenies For Dogs

55633_4838d.jpgI'm not sure any of you have heard of Greenies, for dogs.  They're a treat and are supposed to clean the dogs teeth, in addition to providing a nice smelling breath.  Holly, my 5 year old Boxer/Lab, LOVES them!  I haven't given her too many, as they're not available here on the island.  But Walgreens carries them and I bought a couple bags a few weeks ago.

Just after I'd purchased them, I heard on the News that 13 dogs had died from Greenies.  They were causing an obstruction in the intestine.  Needless to say, I got a little concerned.  Concerned enough that I'd decided Holly had had her last Greenie.  CNN has an article about this, so click the link I've provided to read more.

We had her at the Vet last week for her annual check up and I asked the Vet his opinion.  He said he'd heard about the problems with them also, but didn't say much more than that.

Yesterday afternoon I could tell Holly wasn't feeling up to par and I happened to be standing there when she upchucked.  Thinking she'd eaten something in the yard, I was shocked to clean it up and discover about a 2 inch size of a GREENIE.....basically, it was a vivid green piece of RUBBER.  I couldn't believe it!  Mostly I couldn't believe it because it's been a little over a WEEK since she's had her last Greenie!  I don't have to tell you how grateful I am that she upchucked it, instead of it lodging in her intestine!  I can only hope and pray that's the last of it!

For all of you dog owners, I just wanted to warn you.  How tragic to think 13 dogs died unnecessarily.  I hadn't planned to mention Greenies at all in a blog.....but after my own experience with it yesterday, I wanted dog owners that weren't aware to BE aware.  I also give Greenies to my cats and probably will continue to do so.  They love them and they're not like the canine ones.  These are little pieces, more like cat kibble.

Just sharing my opinion......See you tomorrow.

I don't have a dog now, but I am sure that all owners will thank you for this warning. How can they get away with selling something that doesn't digest?!

Thanks for the visit, Terri, and the health wish. Yes, they were Irish wolfhounds. I had a friend who had one once, named Judy,,,LOL. Judy had some injury to her vocal cords and when she tried to bark, it was a pitiful and curious mixture of a low moan and a hoarsness. Poor Judy....LOL. I sound a lot like her right now.

I heard that about greenies and threw the ones I had out. It's really scary, Wolfie eats those things so fast it's not surprising there are large enough pieces to get caught in the intestines.

Never heard of Greenies until I read about them in your post. Wonder if they're a regional type of pet snack we don't get up here in Michigan.

Hi there, greetings from a neighbor (sort of!) Dh and I live about 45 minutes from Cedar Key, in fact our FAVORITE place for breakfast is Dock Street Depot on an early Saturday morning!!

Goofy...I think that's part of the problem with these. The dogs pretty much inhale them and they never get digested. But it sure can be dangerous.

Dave...Geeze, I'm not sure if it's a regional item or not. My daughter lives in the Boston area. I'll have to ask her if she's seen them.

Jess...well, hello neighbor! Dock Street Depot is good, but have you tried Island Room for dinner? It's the same owner and chef and the cooking is outstanding! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Come back and visit again.

Greenies are made in K.C., Missouri.....they have different sizes for different size dogs.......the dogs are suppose to be "observed" while they are consuming the treat so that you are sure they are eating them slowly......right? hmmmmmmmm. dogs become addicted to the darn things.....I have read pro and con about them.......tis a worry for sure and my dog loves them......My vet also didn't seem very concerned and they continue to sell them..................And yes.........."Charlies" is where I enjoyed many a good meal.......makes me homesick!

My dogs have had them in the past, but after hearing the CNN report, all greenies went into the garbage. I lost a beautiful little Cairn Terrier to a hard rubber toy that she chewed and then swallowed. I still miss her and try to be so careful with the little ones that are my companions now.

Maria that's just it......doggies can become obstructed from any number of toys and foreign objects including BONES which I never give my dogs........

Oh MY GOSH, Terri I gave Beans & Holly greenies while we had dinner, I didn't see the CNN Special, and now after hearing about it, I feel sick to my stomach, I am so sorry and so thankful that Holly is OK, the rest of the greenies are going in the trash as soon as I get home, and I will spread the word.

Hi mom,
yes, we have greenies in boston area, I saw them at petco, but my dumb dog, Jack prefers comforters, socks, my underwear and loves to leave my bras on the back lawn!

Terri; also, I promise to forever more, ask the 'parent' before giving the furry child ANY treats, you know I had that feeling I should have asked before I gave them the treats.

Oh Susan; that is just too funny, I have a friend that has a lab mix that takes her bras out to the porch!

Take care to All

Susan...oh, daughter of mine...I'm killing myself laughing! I've met Jack and as cute as he is...he's a hand full! YOU really need to read "Marley and Me"....I'll send you my copy when I'm finished. Poor Marley did the same thing...loved those bras!

Joyce...WELL, at least the mystery is solved! I had NO idea you'd given a Greenie to Holly while I was inside getting supper. I couldn't understand why she had it inside for over 10 days...LOL....hmmm, she didn't! So it all makes sense now. AND not to worrry....I forgive you. But no more Greenies!

oh yes Terri, NO more greenies and no more giving those 'little beggers' treats without checking with 'mom' first! I felt so bad and thank you for forgiving me. Take care,
Joyce
