Peek-A-Boo/Delurking

Peek-a-Boo.jpgHere at Writing Away, I'm officially declaring today, "National Delurking Day."  What's that mean, you ask?

Webster's has the following listed for the word LURK

  1. To lie hidden, as in ambush
  2. To exist unnoticed or unsuspected
  3. To move secretly or furtively; to slink

Now I'm not accusing anybody of planning an ambush.  Nor am I suggesting that you're slinking.  But that #2 definition might certainly apply.  So...today.....we're DElurking.

According to my stats here, I'm receiving over 500 hits per day.  That's quite a few hits, no?  But if all these people are coming to lurk visit, where are they?  What is it that causes a person to keep returning to read somebody's rambling chatter and yet never feels compelled to click that comment link below the post and just say "Hi."  It really got me to thinking.....

Could it be one of you went to high school with me and if you make yourself known, I might reveal some insane event we shared together?  Or could you be one of the nursing instructors that I stood up to and you still can't admit your way wasn't the right way?  Or perhaps you're that nurse I worked with in ICU and you taught me the true meaning of the word "intimidation?" You might be one of the multitude of people that I met at my book signings or a writers conference.  Or maybe.......you're somebody in the blog world that I don't know at all?

I suppose it could be any or none of the above.  Perhaps as you sit at your computer reading my drival brilliant words, your boss just popped into your office and stole your chance to leave a comment?  Or....you're sitting in the comfort of your home in your jammies and you still don't trust that this machine doesn't relay an instant photo to me?  Or you just figure.....I have nothing to comment on.  But we ALL have something to say.  And we should be saying it....like here, on my blog.  If not for my stats, I'd think my writing here simply fizzled out once it hit the page.  But I know that's not true.....because those of you who I do know personally (and YOU don't leave comments here either, by the way.  Shame on you!) tell me you read my blog daily.  But where are you?

So.....I'd like to bring all of you out of the closet.....just for today, if you insist.  Type in a "hey" or few lines.....let me know you're really out there.  Somewhere.  In cyber space.  Reading my blog.  I know you exist.....I really do.  But heck, I'd sure like to see that.

The comments have never seemed important to me, like they do to some bloggers....guess it's a status thing or something.  But lately it's occurred to me that it gets a bit lonely here every now and then.  So I was just wondering why......

See you tomorrow......

Hey there. I'm not really a lurker because it's my first visit! You know, the people I know in "real life" never comment on my blog, either. Strange...

I'll be back!

I totally know how you feel. My friends are not the commenting type. But I don't get 500 hits a day, either. *lol* I probably get about 30-40, and a bunch of those are probably from when I go in to mess around.

Michele sent me!

I know what you mean, I get quite a few hits every day, but I have a nice growing group of regulars who do comment on a regular basis. I often wonder about that sadistic nursing instructor myself...you had her too, eh? ;) I'm here from Michele's!

Though not technically a "lurker" (at least I don't think so), I have my regular list of blogs I visit, yet I don't always comment on each one. Or I visit to find that there is not a new one up yet.

I wonder myself more about those "anonymous"comments I get on my own blog.

So it looks like all the non-lurking commenters are here and that includes me. I often wonder about lurkers and I love when I say to someone, "Have you seen my blog?" and they answer, "Yes, I look in frequently." I try not to scream "Would it hurt to leave a comment?" Thanks for a post that all of us can relate to.

OH Terri, you caught me! Actually I have left comments before, but it has been awhile. I don't get to read your blog daily and I miss it when I don't. And alot of your entries do touch me and I do have comments (good ones!)But I just figured that you probably get sooooo many emails and comments that you didn't really need my ramblings! But just to let you know -- I'm here! I miss you all, and I am so looking forward to my time in Cedar Key, counting down the days, wish it was this week, but then again I'm not packed yet ...... just give me 5 min and I will be!
take care,

I just recently found your blog. Actually made a comment yesterday, but after this one, anybody's guess when I'll be back or have another comment. Am just exploring the blogging world and may only visit any particular blog occasionally.

Rather dislike the designation as a lurker. That word seems to have a negative connotation, as though I might have some ulterior motive, untoward plan toward the blog, am sneaky in an unacceptable way by visiting a blog without commenting.

On many blogs, I notice a lot of comments that are short greetings, saying nothing about the post that day. I generally never comment unless I have something to say about the posted topic(s.) Also, if it's a blog that regularly has 20-30 or more comments posted, I usually don't have time to read them all. If the topic of that post is of interest I usually read it, but don't bother, then to add my own comment to that already long line of commenters except on rare occasions.

The term lurker is mysterious sounding, so if you and other bloggers prefer to continue referring to me/us in this manner, that's fine. I know my motives are not ulterior, and now you do, too! :-)
