To The Big City.....

Friday was Ray's birthday so we combined that with some Christmas shopping and headed to Gainesville.  No, it doesn't come under the same "big city" category as perhaps Manhattan or Paris....but hey, when you live on an island with about 800 residents trust me, it's big.  I love going to Gainesville.  Sure there's loads of traffic and crowded stores, but it just has a neat feel to it.  We'd never been to the Oak Mall there and I really enjoyed it.  Lots of great shops.  And making it feel even more Christmasy was our weather.  Contrary to what some of you northerners might think....we actually DO get downright chilly here in Florida.  Sometimes.  And Friday was one of those days....overnight it was in the 30's and didn't go above the low 50's during the day.  And just to prove it, here I am complete in coat, woolen scarf and warm sweater and shoes.

Besides showing you we really do get cold here, there's a reason I'm showing you a photo taken next to our car.  Can you guess why?  Ah, but you have to wait till this Friday when I'll share the answer with you.  The department stores were all decorated, as you'll see below.

And after we finished shopping at the mall we headed to downtown Gainesville which I really love with all the restaurants and neat little shops.  We found our way to Amelia's so I could treat Ray to some Italian food for his birthday lunch.

I love the ambiance inside the restaurant.  Very authentic Italian, right down to the waiter with the accent.

We arrived a bit late for normal lunch time and a bit early for dinner, so you can see above we had the place to ourselves.  The food was superb.....Italian bread with oil and herbs, salad, wonderful wine, Ray had spaghetti and meatballs and I had tortellini.

And no trip to the big city is complete without hitting Starbucks for that ride home.

Enjoy your Sunday.......And I'll see you tomorrow.

Here from Michele today.
How far is it to Gainsville from your place? When we lived in Mississippi I took one trip before Christmas over to Birmingham, Al to the Galleria Mall there. Sometimes we stayed in the attached Westin Inn, sometimes we just made a day of it. That trip back across on 82 was always so long.
I must say that food looked delicious!!!!!!

I love the spirit of a grand day's adventure. I'm so glad you took the time to capture it with your camera and build an entry around it: I feel like I've been along for the ride.

Of course, now there's a mystery, too. Hmm, I can't wait to find out what the big surprise is.

I remember once visiting my mother-in-law in the Florida Keys during January. One of her neighbors spoke of the chilly weather they were having, "I can take 50 degrees. But when it gets into the 40s, it's too dang cold."

We call 40-degree temperatures in January a heat wave here in Michigan.

To answer your question on my blog, yes "Return to Salem" refers to your "witch city." My wife and I visited the city once and I had a creepy experience there, which was one of the inspirations for my novella.

Nice pictures of you and your area. What a beautiful restaurant. Made me hungry just looking at the beautiful looking meal.

I appreciate the time you took on my blog, all of your interesting comments. The comments of others, that add insights to whatever I wrote, are what make blogging fun for me. Thank you for yours

Very happy to see photos of Gainesville! Our house in G'ville isn't very far from the Oaks Mall, just off Archer Road, so it was nice to see my old haunts in these pictures, somewhat.
And you're right, it does get very cold up there! The first winter we drove up there from Miami, we made the mistake of turning on the windshield wipers to wash off some of the bugs on the window and the water instantly froze to the glass!

Glad you had a good shopping trip!

G'ville! Go Gators!!! Yes I view it as a big city, but then I like my little Port Orange, which actually is growing too fast for my comfort, move over on that Island, I might have to retire there in .... oh gee I don't want to think about it, my dad is still working and he is 79, hope he doesn't expect me to keep on working!
Oh and Oaks Mall, is a nice mall. Happy BeLated Birthday Ray!
