The Pursuit of HappYness

0060744863_01__AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V55001083_.jpg

Although I consider myself to be well read and well researched, sometimes I feel like I live in a vacuum.  Have you heard of Chris Gardner?  I hadn't until last Wednesday when I saw him and learned about his story on Oprah.  It's been a long time since I've been impressed with somebody like I am with him.

Now 52 years old, he grew up in poverty in Milwaukee.  Subjected to abuse along with the poverty, he spent the first few years of his life in foster care.  This man literally went from rags to riches and is now a multimillionaire.  All because his mother had told him when he was a child, "If you want to be a millionaire, you can be."  As a young adult he was a single dad raising his son and both were homeless.  But he figured out what he needed to do to change that and over time, he accomplished it.  Because he believed he could.  Because he wanted a good life for himself and his son.  Because he had the strength and motivation to do what needed to be done and change his life.  Education was his way out.....as it is for anybody in that situation.  It opened doors and eventually brought him to becoming a top stock broker, followed by opening his own brokerage firm.

I love a success story like this.  I love to see people pull themselves up, take the necessary steps, take the risk and accomplish their dream of a better life.  People like Chris Gardner are proof that it can be done if we really want it.  But again.....education was the means to the end.  I've never talked about it here, but education turned my entire life around when I was twenty-five years old.  It opened untold doors for me and brought me to where I am right this second.  I can't vocalize enough on how important education is.....it gives one freedom, escape and options.

Gardner's autobiography was released in May of this year but I'd never heard of it till last week.  And yes, I've already ordered it and look forward to reading it.  You might know the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, will be released on December 15.  It stars Will Smith and his 8 year old son, Jaden.  From the clips I saw on Oprah, I can't wait to see the movie.  A remarkable story with remarkable acting.

Another story that proves to me once again.......If you can dream it, you can BE it.

See you tomorrow........

I didn't know this story until I saw the preview for Will Smith's movie and Martin told me it was an incredible true story. I had never heard of the guy. I want to see the movie. It just shows that people with enough ambition can accomplish anything and that there are truly a lot of lazy Americans. People are still accomplishing their dreams here. Still sacraficing for a better life....working hard. Sadly I think there are way too many who want quick rewards with little or no work and that just isn't the way it is supposed to go.

Terri,
I so completely agree with you. As a mother of two small children and on welfare, I was able to make it through four years of college in three and go on to a 34 year career in teaching.

That makes me a believer in you can be what ever you want. Dreams come true and yes, education is the key to success.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie.

I have not heard of him either but I, too, love stories like this. Let me know how the book is so I can order it. Thanks!

I saw previews for that movie too and it looked pretty good. Will have to check out the autobiography.

Sorry to hear about your aunt. That was a nice tribute/biography that you wrote here. It really celebrated her life well. I could picture her in my mind.

That novel-writing project of mine has been an adventure. It'll made a humorous blog when I'm done, but the novel itself needs major work. Thanks for asking and thanks for the holiday wishes. Hope your's was wonderful as well.

I had never heard of him either but sounds like the right kind of thing to concentrate on. I do believe in that way of thinking

I know nothing about this man, other then the commercials for the movie and until now I did not know it was about a real person. Now I am interested. Thanks for letting us know.

Funny, I just heard about the movie from a friend this weekend and the other day I saw a segment on TV where they talked about who they thought would be winners at the Academy Adwards, and guess what -Will Smith in the lead role in "The Pursuit of Happyness."

Sounds like a great book and great movie. I'll be looking for it.

I love heartwarming life triumph stories as well. It'a amazing how many stories we learn about via movies that we wouldn't otherwise know about.

I love a rags-to-riches story as well as the next person, but I'm always puzzled about the leap from the specific example to the notion that it just takes belief in oneself, dreaming it, creative visualization, etc. to achieve one's goals. This is such a Republican notion: that everyone can pull themselves up by their bootstraps if they only want to bad enough, are willing to work hard, etc. I wonder how one reconciles this belief with Democratic ideas like the need for regulation of pharmaceutical companies so that people like the diabetic you wrote so passionately about, who must make the choice between medicine and food, can have a chance to reach for his dreams?
Don't always believe the hype, Chris Gardner is not a multi-millionaire as is claimed. According to public records the IRS has a lien of nearly $700 thousand against him.
